Health Over Length... The Big Chop - 22.06.13

Saturday 22nd June 2013

So I haven't posted in the last couple of weeks as I've been busy with work and We Love Button Jewellery.

For a few weeks now I've been noticing that my ends were breaking up the hair despite having 1.5 - 2 inches cut off in April and realised that unless I had a major chop my ends would continue to split and I'd eventually end up with no hair! (Maybe a slight exaggeration lol).

This week was payday so I decided to go for the big chop, saying good by to my armpit length hair! I desperately wanted to get it done after work on Friday but I couldn't get an appointment so I settled for Saturday at 12.30, taking advantage of my long hair for one more day by having a high bun!

It is so important to know you're own hair so you know when things are going right but also when things are going wrong. When I was younger I would of happily held onto that long hair for years to come, damaged and thin or not! Now I'm 30, I guess I'm more realistic, I know if I want long healthy hair, I need to be able to get rid of the dead damaged ends in order to see the results I want.

Last June when I started my hair journey, I wasn't as clued up or know my hair like I do now and instead of insuring I had healthy ends to start with, I just started caring for my hair and praying for the best and that was my downfall.

Looking back, my hair was healthiest when I used two different salons for two different reasons. Hair Sanctuary for my trims every 3 months, and a hairdresser called Simone in London for my relaxer touch ups and treatments. So I decided to go back to my trusty hairdresser Teresa at Hair Sanctuary for my trim as I new she'd be ruthless and not let me hang on to any dead hair.

When 12.30 came and I arrived at the salon, I wasn't even nervous which surprised the hell out of me. I'm usually dreading getting into the hot seat. I took my hair down from my high bun and let Teresa examine my hair and we were both in agreement that I had just under 3 inches of breakage that just had to go!

I opted for a dry cut as I felt that it made it easier to see the damaged ends and my hair was only washed on Thursday evening.

Layer by layer more of my ends hit the floor and instead of feeling sad I felt excited for my lengths to come. My hair now looks and feels healthy and amazing and I am now officially shoulder length!

  1. I know what you mean. I will be doing a big trim when I remove my braids as my ends are quite dry. Will be more damaging to hold on to the length in the end. my only problem is not many Hairdressers know how to handle natural hair so I trim myself. I always cut less than I should! Will get serious now!!
