Autumn / Winter Hair Regimen 2016/17I have been on my hair journey for over 4 years now and I try to keep my regime as simple as possible whilst maintaining a moisture & protein balance for my low porosity hair. I used to be a ridiculous product junkie with so many products I was running out of space so I decided to take it back to basics and stick to my hair loves. I still like to try new products, just not as often and only if it’s a product I currently need, either way, my actual hair regime always stays the same.WeeklyPre-Poo (Pre-shampoo)Prior to washing my hair, I like to do a pre-poo treatment on the length of my hair. I alternate my pre-poo, one week I will pre-poo with just extra virgin coconut oil overnight and the alternate week I will pre-poo using a light protein conditioner sealed with extra virgin coconut oil, cover with a plastic cap and sit under the hood dryer for 30 minutes.ShampooI shampoo my hair once a week using a sulfate free moisturising shampoo. My go to shampoo is Crème of Nature Moisture & Shine shampoo.Deep ConditionHaving washed my hair, I go on to deep condition, alternating weekly between a moisturising conditioner and a light protein conditioner. The week I pre-poo with just extra virgin coconut oil, I will deep condition with a light protein conditioner. The alternate week when pre-pooing with a light protein conditioner, I will deep condition with a moisturising conditioner. My go to moisturising conditioner is Crème of Nature intensive conditioning treatment, for light protein, my favourites are ORS Replenishing conditioner and ORS HaiRepair Nourishing conditioner and I alternate between the two. I always mix oils in with my deep conditioner and my favourites are Jamaican black castor oil, extra virgin olive oil and avocado oil. Once I have applied the conditioner to my hair root to tip, I cover with a plastic cap and always sit under the hooded dryer for 30 minutes to an hour.Leave-Ins & Air-dryingOnce my hair is 50% - 60% dry, I apply my leave-ins; Crème of Nature Strength & Shine Leave in which is a light protein and I follow this up by applying Aunt Jackie's quench moisture intensive leave-in conditioner and a dab of serum which helps me to achieve smoother sleeker results once dry. I prefer to use no heat on my hair at all so I will air-dry the majority of the time, alternatively I will blow dry with cold air. Once my hair is 90% dry I will then go on to moisturise and seal my hair.DailyMoisturise & SealEvery evening, I section my hair into four and apply a water based moisturiser from root to tip. My all-time favourite moisturiser is Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Moisturizer and has been a staple product in my regime for the last 3-4 years. I also have my moments when I will switch to other products to moisturise but the above is my ultimate love.Once my hair is moisturised, I go on to sealing the moisture into my hair by using two drops of oil on each section. My go to oils for sealing in moisture are; avocado oil, grapeseed oil, extra virgin olive oil or a mix of all of the above with a tablespoon of Jamaican black castor oil. I use extra virgin coconut oil in the warmer months but I am worried about the effect it may have on my hair in the colder months so I leave this for pre-pooing.I am currently sealing in my moisture with Africa's Best Herbal oil and I love how it makes my hair feel soft and moist every day.Daily Hair Care:
- Oil my scalp every other night with my oil mix.
- Keep my hair in a low manipulation bun hairstyle 99% of the time.
- At night I put my hair in a loose bun with a satin scrunchy and cover with a satin scarf. I also sleep on a satin pillow case.
Styling / DetanglingI use Crème of Nature Edge Control to lay my edges when wearing low manipulation styles.I don’t have to use it very often but when if am struggling to detangle my hair I use Mane & Tail Detangler which always does the trick at helping me run my fingers or comb through my hair at ease.MonthlyClarify ShampooOnce a month, I use a clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup of product and I always use the ORS Creamy Aloe Shampoo which doesn’t make my hair feel dry or stripped.Protein TreatmentFollowing my clarifying wash, I go on to give my hair a medium protein treatment using ORS Hair Mayonnaise and again I always mix the conditioner with oils for that extra oomph. I cover with a plastic cap and sit under the hood dryer for 30 – 40 minutes then rinse once cool. The ORS Hair Mayonnaise never leaves my hair dry or hard to manage once rinsed but I always do a last rinse by applying a conditioner like Herbal Essences Hello Hydration conditioner for a boost of moisture. I leave it in my hair for 5 minutes then rinse.Relaxer DayI relax my hair every 10 -12 weeks using ORS Olive Oil Relaxer in normal strength.Apply extra virgin coconut oil to the length of my hair including my new growth the night before as well as oiling my scalp with my oil mix. On the day of my relaxer I will base my edges and scalp with petroleum jelly and apply extra virgin olive oil to my hair avoiding my new growth just before applying relaxer.
Prior to my
holiday, I decided to get a protective style done so that whilst on holiday I
didn't have to worry about styling my hair and put myself through the constant washing
and conditioning my hair.
I decided on Marley
twists and booked an appointment at a local hair salon for Friday 23rd
September which would give me three weeks before my holiday to get used to my
hair and give it time to loosen up so I could style it once I was away.
My appointment
was for 4.30pm but as what seems to be standard procedure from when I used to
go to the salon back in the day, my hair didn't get started until 5.30pm as
there were other ladies in the salon which the hairdresser had to finish off
first.
I wanted my hair to be lightweight and didn't want my twists to be too long or the twists too thick as I wanted to be able to put my hair up in a ponytail or bun when I go too hot etc. I had two ladies doing my hair and I was finished within 3 hours which I was pleased about and I loved how my hair turned out considering they didn't listen to me as my twists were waist length and I felt like I had a thousand twists in my head. They sealed the ends of my twists by soaking them in boiling hot water and I made sure to keep an eye to ensure my actual hair was nowhere near the water. They thought I was strange to which I told them I was not willing to damage my real hair just to seal my twists.

When I got home
that evening, I liberally spritzed my hair with water and leave in conditioner then
sealed with my Doo Gro Shine & Polish mist, covered with a satin bonnet and
relaxed for the evening. The next morning when I woke up my head felt sooo
heavy it was unreal and my scalp felt like it was on fire but to ease the
pressure I spritzed with water again and oiled my scalp with my castor oil mix.
Sunday, my hair felt a bit better but I couldn't help wondering how I was going
to cope with so much hair on my head in the heat but I kept telling myself that
by time it got to flying off on holiday I'd be used to the twists and all would
be well.
By Friday (30th
September) morning, I knew that once I finished work I'd be going home to take
out my hair. My scalp felt like it was constantly on fire, it was itching like
crazy and where I gave in and was itching like a mad woman, my scalp was so
sore where I had broken through the skin with my nails.
As soon as I got
home and changed out of my work clothes, I began to take out my hair and it was all out
within the hour and I felt the instant relief on my scalp. Once out, I oiled my
scalp and pre-pooed over night with extra virgin coconut oil and extra virgin
olive oil and washed my hair the next evening.
Luckily by
oiling my scalp every day and keeping my hairstyles loose, my scalp was back to
its normal self within 2-3 days. I think it is safe to say, I won't be putting
myself or my scalp through that again.
Tell me I'm not the only person who has experienced this?
I got back from my holiday on the morning of Friday 28th October and had good intentions to catch up on some sleep and then wash my hair... I slept all day and had to go to an event in the evening so wash day was pushed back to Saturday.
In my last post I documented how I looked after my hair with the sea salt water, sand and how weather and as much as I tried to ensure that my hair was always protected, I knew it was important to give my hair some TLC now I'm home.
I started my wash day by sectioning my hair and trimming my ends, taking off just over a centimetre as I'd noticed the beginning of fuzzy split ends whilst on holiday and couldn't wait to come home and trim them off. I know it's unusual to trim my hair prior to washing it but my hair was pretty clean as it had been washed and conditioned on Wednesday having got my hair wet at the beach,.
I pre-pooed my hair using L'Oreal Elvive Total Repair Conditioner sealed with extra virgin coconut oil, covered with a plastic cap and sat under the hood dryer for 35 minutes then rinsed once cool and shampooed with Creme of Nature Moisture & Shine Shampoo.
I towel dried to remove any excess water then liberally applied Creme of Nature Intensive Conditioning Treatment mixed with Africa's Best Herbal Oil, covered with a plastic cap and sat under the hood dryer for 45 minutes, rinsing once cool.
I t-shirt dried for 15-20 minutes then applied my leave-ins; Creme of Nature Strength & Shine Leave-in, Aunt Jackie's Moisture Intense Leave-in and sealed with Silk of Morocco Hair & Skin Treatment. I detangled my hair in sections with a wide tooth comb and then air-dried with a satin scarf to lay my edges and keep my hair tame as it dried.
Once 90% dry, I moisturised and sealed with Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Moisturizer and Africa's Best Herbal Oil. I oiled my scalp with my castor oil mix of Lavender JBCO and peppermint oil then put my hair in a loose bun as I was just chilling at home for the evening.
My hair feels so soft, moisturised and bouncy, it was definitely a nice and easy wash day...

I have just returned from an amazing family holiday in Barbados and it was extremely hot for this time of year which means I had to ensure that my hair has been kept moist at all times.
We pretty much went to a beach every day. To prepare my hair before leaving for the beach, I applied a mix of Herbal Essences hello hydration conditioner mixed with glycerin and water to the length of my hair and sealed with extra virgin coconut oil. I kept both the conditioner mix and the coconut oil in 100ml travel size bottles which I bought from Primark so that whilst at the beach if needed I was able to apply more product to my hair. We also used sun loungers and parasols each time we went to the beach so that when we weren't in the sea, we had shelter from the heat.
Once back from the beach, I would rinse and apply conditioner to my hair whilst having a shower and would then go on to co-wash with the hello hydration conditioner. I t-shirt dried for 10-15 minutes and then applied my leave ins before detangling my hair and air-drying which has been effortless as it's been so warm my hair has been drying in no time. I was away for two weeks and ensured to shampoo and do a thorough deep condition once a week and moisturised and sealed every night with Elasta QP Olive Oil & Mango Butter Moisturizer and extra virgin coconut oil.
As my last relaxer touch-up was on 7th October, on my first weekend in Barbados when washing my hair, I deep conditioned using Africa's Best Hair Mayonnaise which is a medium protein treatment to add some strength back into my hair.
I packed both my hairdryer and my hair straighteners but just looking at them made me feel hot and I didn't want any hair on my shoulders or in my face so I just kept my hair up in a bun or in bunches to keep my ends protected.
One evening I decided to do a twist out as we were going out for the night. I washed my hair, air-dried, added my leave ins and then put my hair into eight rough sections to avoid partings showing. I applied Cantu Define & Shine Custard to each section and sealed with extra virgin coconut oil before twisting. Once twisted, I covered with a satin bonnet and left on whilst I got ready. Once dressed, I added a drop of coconut oil on my fingertips and gently unravelled each twist. I loved the results and my hair was so soft and shiny with so much bounce I wished I had tried this product sooner as my son loves it for his hair. As I was admiring my curls, the skies opened up and the rain started to fall so hard I ended I tried a few styles before ending up putting my hair in a loose curly bun wish I forgot to take a picture of.
Looking after my hair whilst on holiday was hassle-free which was a pleasant surprise and I just need to be strict on my hair regime over the next few weeks; keeping my hair moist and deep conditioning with both a moisture and light protein based conditioners to prevent any breakage now I am back home in the UK with the switch to our harder water.

My Review:
I picked up this hair moisturiser when looking for something to keep the boys hair moist and to stop them from using my hair products.
I ran out of my staple moisturiser and couldn't get to the shop before it closed so decided to give the Cantu Cream Hair lotion a try and was quite sceptical if I am honest.
I first used this to moisturise and seal my hair after air-drying to 80% and was pleasantly surprised by how moist my hair was once fully dry. With most moisturisers, when air-drying I tend to have to moisturise and seal again before bed to ensure my hair is still moist and I'm not waking up to dry hair.
The consistency is like a creamy lotion, quite thick but when applying it to your hair a little goes a long way and this does not weigh down my hair at all. My hair is left, moist, shining, and easy to detangle and the best thing about this product is it contains no mineral oil, sulfates, parabens, silicones, phthalates, gluten, paraffin or propylene.
I started using this product in March of this year so the weather was quite cold and this managed to keep my hair moist, I think this can work as an all year round moisturiser and when the colder months do kick in I will just use a heavier oil to seal it with.
I am due to go on holiday on 13th October and this will definitely be my moisturiser of choice to keep my hair moist in the sun if I don't have time to get box braids....
